WORLD NEWS: BBM for iPhone now lets users pay to remove ads and get a custom PIN

BlackBerry has released an update for theiPhone version of its BBM messaging app. The new version includes paid subscription options to get rid of ads and more.

For 99 cents a month, BBM users won't see any ads in their feed, and also won't get any sponsored invites from third parties. For $1.99 a month, users can also create a custom PIN. Here's how that will work:

With a Custom PIN subscription you can make a PIN that's easy for you and your friends to remember and/or says something special about you. Custom PINs have to follow certain guidelines. They must be 6-8 characters long, and can include numbers and letters only. Special characters cannot be used and PINs are not case sensitive.

Some of the other new features in this 2.7.0.69 update include being able to lock BBM with a passcode and Touch ID. Users can now share photos directly in group chats and there's also a way to delete chats by swiping. In addition, the app includes landscape support for the first time.

TOP NEWS: Free addictive Android gaming on BlackBerry 10 with Jelly Jump

It's been a while since I came across a free game from the Snap store that I felt compelled to share. That changed the other day when I downloaded Jelly Jump onto myBlackBerry Z30 as it's one of those games that's great to have on your device for when you have a short time to kill, whether that be on the train/bus or just when you have nothing better to do.

The game revolves you controlling a square of jelly and you are tasked with moving it up the screen by jumping onto the platforms that appear. One handed use is a breeze as there's only one control and that's a simple screen tap. Where things get a little tricky is that the platforms appear at different speeds, so if you misjudge it and don't jump through the closing gap, it will be game over.

The purpose of the game is just to get as far as you can and as you'll see in the video it can be a little tricky. I'm proud to say that since shooting the video clip I've beaten that highest score, so I'm not quite as terrible at it as I portray!

TOP NEWS: BlackBerry CEO: 'I intend to continue to build a hardware business'

Mobile World Congress is already well underway in Barcelona, Spain and while it wasn't entirely expected to happen this early, BlackBerry has made several announcements. The biggest one arguably comes by way of their unveiling of the company's plans for cross-platform services via what they're calling the BlackBerry Experience Suite. The suite was noted to be 'a major company-wide initiative in BlackBerry's commitment to build out its robust software portfolio' and that includes bringing some beloved, and thus far BlackBerry 10 only, features to other platforms such as iOS, Android andWindows.

What features? Well, as highlighted in the BlackBerry Experience Suite video above, the BlackBerry Hub, the BlackBerry virtual keyboard, Universal Search, BlackBerry Calendar and more are on their way to other platforms one way or another and although details still remain rather slim for now (Will you need to pay? Will it be for BES only? etc.), they are likely to arrive on the various platforms by the end of the year according toBlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen who spoke on a conference call with the media earlier today, while stressing that BlackBerry is still committed to its own devices.

"This is just a very natural evolution of taking our OS, the surfaces and security layers around it and putting it on others' devices, so that our serviceable market is not only 'BlackBerry' devices, but all devices," "I intend to continue to build a hardware business" he said. "But there will be a lot of focus on the software business too."

The news of BlackBerry expanding their cross-platform strategy shouldn't really be news at all to anyone who has been paying attention to John Chen's moves. In fact, the comments pretty much echo what he said last year when he travelled to Hong Kong to speak at the Technologies that Matter forum. There he noted, 'We have to treat everything as part of our ecosystem, not just BlackBerry'and these announcements today are the continuation of that. They were foretold, we just didn't know how they would be rolled out. We now know.

BlackBerry got blasted in the media for waiting too long to take BBM cross-platform, it seems they're not making that mistake again and if their software and services can make them money elsewhere, then it makes sense to do so. Selling to BlackBerry customers alone isn't enough and we all know there's plenty of Android, iOS and Windows devices out there. If Chen can make money there, he's going to do it, logically.

TOP NEWS: TinyPlanet lets you turn your landscape photos into a sphere - 1000 free copies available

There are plenty of photo editors around to let you add effects to your photos. There's a native photo editor on BlackBerry 10, while there are lots of apps to be found in BlackBerry World. Usually, they let you add filter effects, stickers and text, amongst other things. However, this app, TinyPlanet, offers to turn your landscape or panoramic shots into spheres that look like tiny planets. Hence the name for the app.

It's only really best with landscape or panoramic shots unless you want to create mad looking selfies. To get started, just open the app and then tap Open to choose a photo. Once you have chosen one, your photo will be presented as a sphere. You then have a few options to tweak the photo. You can give it a tunnel effect or a mirror effect, or apply both at the same time. There are three sliders for tweaking - zoom, rotation and twist. The pretty much do as labelled.

It's probably not something you'll use everyday but it's a neat little photo editing tool. You can watch the video above for a run through of the app.
